Yasmin Ahmad passes away

KUALA LUMPUR - Industry tributes have been pouring in after Yasmin Ahmad, ECD at Leo Burnett Malaysia, died on Saturday evening.

She was 51.

Ahmad suffered a stroke on Thursday. Initial reports said she was recovering in hospital, but her condition worsened and she passed away late on Saturday night. The cause of death is believed to be a brain haemorrhage. Her funeral was held on Sunday morning.

Highlights of her advertising career include the ‘Funeral’ ad for the Singapore Government, released earlier this year, and ‘Tan Hong Ming’ for Petronas, which won a Gold at Cannes and a Gold at last year’s Spikes.

"The Yasmin I spoke to just hours before she was admitted into the hospital was the same Yasmin I've known since 1987. She was brilliant, funny, intelligent. She was one in a billion," said Tan Kien Eng, MD of Leo Burnett & Arc Malaysia. "Yasmin is irreplaceable. Her work had true human purpose - it touched people's hearts and she will always be remembered."

Tony Savarimuthu, CEO of McCann Worldgroup Malaysia, who worked with Ahmad for 11 years, said her friends were still in shock. "She was unabashedly in love with life and people. She noted all those special, charming and quirky things around her and expressed them through her work."

He added: "Not one for endless powerpoint and convoluted strategies, she thought very simply and logically about client issues - where they would like to be from where they are and how we could get them there."

Lara Hussein, CEO of M&C Saatchi Malaysia, said her biggest contributions to advertising were bridging the generation gap and promoting a multi-racial message in her campaigns. "What gave her an edge as a creative was her clear understanding of people. She understood the country well, especially the young generation. On the surface she came across as jovial, friendly and casual, but she was really profound."

Datuk Vincent Lee, president of 4As Malaysia, said the industry would be a poorer place without her. "It’s not only a loss to the advertising and film industry but a loss to the country. Yasmin was an exceptional person and we cannot find anyone like her."
