Bates will be responsible for the development of marketing strategy and above- and below-the-line initiatives for the account. The agency has previously handled creative for BoCom’s credit card.

Arthur Yu, Bates’ chief executive for China and Taiwan, described the appointment as both an honour and “a great challenge”. He added that it raised the agency’s visibility in the financial sector.

Based in Shanghai, BoCom has a network covering around 80 cities in China, as well as branches in Singapore, Tokyo, New York, London and Frankfurt. HSBC holds a 20 per cent stake in the company.
