Ad-funded mobile content to offset piracy losses

MACAU - A report by the Mobile Entertainment Forum shows that revenue garnered through mobile entertainment products supported by advertising will help offset lost revenues due to piracy on mobile content such as games, music and ringtones in Southeast Asia.

According to the Forum, ad-funded mobile entertainment (AFME) will be worth US$2.6million in Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand by 2013, a figure that amounts to 52 million click-throughs on mobile entertainment products.

The expansion of these ad-supported platforms will also help strengthen mobile’s position as an entertainment channel in the region and usher in a more mature mobile market as a whole, said Stefan Rust, MEF Asia chair.

“Our membership is telling us there are clear benefits to ad-funded content. This is not just replacing revenues lost through piracy but also helping to grow mobile entertainment revenues in the long-term,” Rust said in a release. “This growth in mobile entertainment revenues reflects a maturing mobile data market across Asia and will also drive innovation for mobile advertising to develop beyond messaging and banner advertisements.”
