FIFA World Cup tops Google searches in Hong Kong and Taiwan

HONG KONG – Google’s Zeitgeist has revealed the most searched keywords in the first half of the year for Hong Kong and Taiwan, with 'FIFA' and 'World Cup' taking the top spots.

‘World Cup' and ‘iPad' both dominate the most popular and the fastest rising keywords for Hong Kong. The rest of the most searched terms in order are 'iPhone 4', homeless vagrant 'Brother Sharp', 'Tian'anmen 64' and activist 'Chan Hau Man'. Also on the list are 'Hong Kong Book City', 'Australian Open' and local movies 'Echoes of the Rainbow' and 'IpMan2'.

For consumer electronics, the list is dominated by mobile gadgets and includes 'iPad', 'iPhone 4', 'Nexus One', 'HTC Desire', 'Nokia X6', 'Samsung Galaxy S', 'Canon 550D', 'PSP', 'Sony NEX-5' and 'Wii'.

Facebook leads as the most searched website, followed by YouTube, Yahoo, Baidu, Uwants, Taobao, Tudou and Classifiedpost. Sites on financial news and red wine are also on the list.

Separately, Taiwan shows a very different trend and a list dominated by entertainment keywords. ‘FIFA' is ranked as the most popular search term with ‘apply for tax' second. Apart from 'iPad' lower down the list in sixth position, the rest of the list is mostly entertainment related and includes model 'Alicia', 'Brother Sharp', singer 'Li Yu Chun', tennis player 'Lu Yenhsun', TV show 'Summer's Desire', webgame 'El Dorado' and Japanese drama 'Moon Lovers'.
