DHL calls global creative pitch after Ogilvy resigns

GLOBAL - Ogilvy & Mather is believed to have resigned the global creative account of logistics and communications company DHL, leading the client to call a pitch.

DHL calls global creative pitch after Ogilvy resigns
Anita Gupta, senior vice-president and head of corporate communications for Asia-Pacific & EMEA, confirmed the news and said: "Deutsche Post DHL has decided to put out to tender its corporate DHL advertising budget. Several advertising agencies will participate in this pitch."

The pitch will be headed out of Bonn, Germany. Gupta declined to give the name of the agencies involved saying it would be "inappropriate".

Ogilvy & Mather's participation in the global UPS pitch is expected to be the reason behind its resignation of the DHL account. UPS initiated a global review of its US$200 million account in April this year. The review covers global advertising, media buying, relationship marketing and digital services.

Agencies believed to be in the running for this account include an IPG shop and the US incumbent The Martin Agency, as well as Euro RSCG (with Media Planning Group), JWT (with Mindshare and RMG), and Y&R (with Wunderman and Mindshare). Ogilvy is pitching with Maxus. UPS earlier stated that the current roster shops McCann Erickson, Universal McCann and MRM, all units of IPG, would not be included in the review.

O&M has handled the global creative for DHL since 2007. The five-month pitch culminated in a final two-way shoot-out between the WPP-owned agency and M&C Saatchi. The win consolidated all of DHL's global business, which had previously been split between a number of agencies around the world, including some parts of the Ogilvy network. It is understood that the centralised business was until now run out of Ogilvy Advertising in London.

The Deutsche Post DHL have over 500,000 employees in more than 220 countries. In 2008, Deutsche Post DHL revenues exceeded US$77 billion.
