CHINA - The popular stylised wingless 'Angry Birds' have taken the form of mooncakes in time for the upcoming Mid-Autumn Festival.

Finnish-based Roxio Mobile has extended the domination of its Angry Birds franchise into food. The branded mooncakes (pictured), with the traditional egg yolk and lotus paste centre, are now on sale at Taobao's TMall online store, for US$15 per pair. As of press time, more than 4430 sets of Angry Birds cakes have already flown off the online shelves.

Other official Rovio merchandise, including  Angry Birds iPhone cases and T-shirts , are available on the site, targeting mainland China's pool of more than 300 million mobile internet users.

Restaurant chain Maxim's Group in Hong Kong has already turned the birds into chocolate, mango and pomelo mooncakes, retailing at a cheaper price tag of US$4.90 (HK$38) per pair.

Rovio is catapulting into Asia with the opening of offices in Hong Kong and Shanghai soon. The official announcement was made during the Asia Online Games Summit earlier this month.

Earlier this year, Rovio’s Chief Marketing Officer Peter Vesterbacka said the Angry Birds franchise is the third-most-copied brand in China, behind Disney and Hello Kitty. Planned endeavors in the country include 200 retail stores over the next three years selling authentic Angry Birds products.
