Vu The Binh, head of the Travel Department under the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism, is quoted as saying that the planned emphasis on Europe and Asia stems from the high visitor traffic from those regions over the past few years.

He said that per capita, China and ASEAN are the largest suppliers of tourists, while the biggest spenders hail from Europe, Japan and Korea.

According to the country’s General Statistics Office, Vietnam received 4.6 million foreign tourists in the first 11 months of this year, a 36.5 per cent increase on the same period last year.

In just 11 months, tourism has already exceeded its 4.5 million visitor target for the entire year, and the government agency is hopeful December will push numbers over five million.

The tourism industry is projected to generate US$4.6 billion for the country, up from US$3 billion last year.
