UnionPay was established in China seven years ago and serves as the mainland’s only inter-bank network. The majority of its credit cards operate in conjunction with Visa or MasterCard and are accepted in 20 countries including Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

A source close to the review noted that credit cards in China were “growing, but a new concept”.

DDB declined to comment when contacted by Media. The agency was recently awarded a project by Volkswagen after a five-way pitch.
