It is understood that Muji first announced its impending arrival in Malaysia about two years ago, and local fans have since been waiting for its official arrival. A Muji Malaysia Facebook page set up by fans has garnered more than 1,300 likes.

The word “Muji’ is short for Mujirushi Ryohin, which means “no-brand quality goods”. The retailer already has stores in Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Jakarta.

The company spent more than US$326,000 on renovations for its new outlet in Pavilion Kuala Lumpur. According to reports, the brand is looking at opening five stories in the Klang Valley over the next three years. The location for its second store has been identified and Muji hopes to open the second outlet by year's end.
