JWT lands AOR appointment for Carlsberg Hong Kong

HONG KONG - JWT has been appointed agency of record for Carlsberg in the Hong Kong market after a competitive pitch with four invited agencies.

The new assignment will see JWT responsible for delivering executions for Carlsberg Hong Kong's full range of beer brands, namely: Carlsberg, Chill, Corona, Asahi, Jolly Shandy, SKOL, K1664, Somersby and Erdinger.

Carlsberg did not have an agency of record before this, but worked with several agencies on individual beer brands. "We found ourselves in a situation with limited senior and strategic alignment between us and the agencies. Our brands are our most important assets after our people, this is why we required a change in the way we work," Carlsberg Hong Kong's managing director Daniel Sjögren commented.

JWT Hong Kong CEO Dennis Wong said the win was the result of a "worldmade effort with offices across the JWT network sharing global information and knowledge about the beer sector that we coupled with our strong local insights".

Sjögren continued to say that the appointment of JWT is a significant step in Carlsberg's efforts to "bring our customers and consumers outstanding brand experiences that sets us apart from the rest.”

According to industry research from Euromonitor, due to a huge influx of various international brands into the alcoholic beverages sector in Hong Kong, consumers are becoming increasingly discriminating, resulting in demands for more brand differentiation.

According to Sjögren, JWT’s creative idea that won the pitch was "very good and will break through the noise in the market during 2012".

Carlsberg was first imported into Hong Kong in 1923, after which a brewery was established in a joint venture with the East Asiatic Company in 1978. Production moved to Huizhou in Southern China in 1999.

Currently holding the number two position in the local beer market, Carlsberg Hong Kong is also the distributor for Guinness, Kilkenny and Asahi.

Other major beers consumed in Hong Kong are Heineken, San Miguel, Blue Girl, Budweiser, and Tsingtao.
