Yeung Gwong | Sunshine Everywhere | Hong Kong

Hong Kong signature drinks brand, Yeung Gwong lemon tea, has launched a digital campaign for 2010.

Popular in the 1980s, Yeung Gwong is known for its puppy love themed commercials. The ads feature up-and-coming idols in Hong Kong, many of whom have now become famous overseas.

To coincide with its 25th anniversary, Yeung Gwong asked local boutique agency Metta Communications to rejuvenate the brand in an effort to reconnect with local teenagers.

Titled ‘Sunshine everywhere', the new campaign explores the emotional ups and downs of being a high school girl. According to Metta, the love story is comparatively different to those featured in previous ads. The story celebrates “a new kind of puppy love relationship – more complicated and confused than ever. Unlike past commercials where the female has always been secretly in love, we now see her taking on a braver role.”

The brand name Yeung Gwong itself means ‘sunshine’ in Chinese and aims to bring optimism to its young audience. The campaign also runs with the tagline 'There is sunshine everywhere'.

The television commercials directs people to the Yeung Gwong website. As well as a full-length commercial video, the site also includes blogs for the main character featured in the ad. She will video blog throughout the next two months and ask people for advice. To generate further user engagements, people can send paper airplanes to their friends which contain messages they are too afraid to communicate in person. To date the campaign has attracted 40,000 clicks on YouTube and 13,000 people have left messages on the site.

Behind the scenes footage is available on Yeung Gwong’s Facebook page. In addition, the brand is also hosting a talent contest encouraging fans to vote for their favourite contestants.
