Sky TV and DDB beseech public to topple a hated 'Game of Thrones' character

NEW ZEALAND - Sky TV and DDB New Zealand have erected a seven-metre statue of 'Game of Thrones' character King Joffrey, which will be dragged to the ground—Saddam Hussein-style—if enough people tweet with the hashtag #bringdowntheking.

Sky TV and DDB beseech public to topple a hated 'Game of Thrones' character

The promotion for the fourth-season debut of the TV series on Sky's SoHo channel centres on the statue, which is located in Auckland's Aotea Square. Tweets carrying the hashtag will move a winch attached to a rope around the statue's neck—with each tweet bringing the hated character one cog closer to a fall.

Fans can watch the progress of the winch and live-streaming video of the square on a dedicated website.

“Game of Thrones is a worldwide phenomenon, and King Joffrey is quite possibly the most hated fictional television character of all time," said Travis Dunbar, SKY’s director of programming. "It’s exciting to give fans an opportunity they are dying for; to assist in the demise of the King of the Iron Throne.”

Added Shane Bradnick, DDB executive creative director, "It’s great to be working with clients that want to create ideas that bring the fictional, digital and real worlds together. Let’s bring the bastard down!”
