Goh has progressed up the ranks at the paper at which he began his journalism career, having started reporting on crime for Lianhe Zaobao in 1987. He subsequently became deputy editor of the paper as well as consulting editor at My Paper, Singapore’s only bilingual free newspaper.
Goh replaces outgoing editor Lim Kim Joon who will relinquish his role and take a less hands-on position at the paper as editorial advisor for the next year. Lim’s leadership of the paper has been instrumental in establishing the paper’s brand name in China where strong readership has led zaobao.com to become one of the top Chinese news websites in the world, the newspaper said.
Commenting on his new appointment, Goh spoke of his respect for the paper and his determination to build on the legacy that Lim will leave. “Lianhe Zaobao is more than just a newspaper. It is a national institution”, he said, calling the opportunity both “a privilege and a heavy responsibility”. With experience on government committees including positions on both public transport and housing boards, Goh has signaled that some of that management expertise will be employed at the paper, suggesting that some shuffling of the staff roster will take effect immediately. “This is to bring in fresh ideas,” he said. “But the core values of Zaobao will never change. Zaobao will continue to be credible, reliable, fair and accurate in our coverage.”
