A spokesperson from GroupM stated that Chen had resigned for “personal reasons”, but that details of his next move were unknown.

The spokesperson added that the vacancy left by Chen was unlikely to be filled, since his departure created an opportunity for increased “efficiency” within the network.

In spite of his title, Chen’s most recent active role had been that of head of GroupM knowledge, a think tank set up to manage the group’s research and proprietary tools.

Chen joined GroupM from Initative, where he served as China managing director, in 2007.
