The new WE Digital team has already secured two new key pieces of business, including Mars's M&Ms and leading Chinese car rental provider China Auto Rental. The latter hired WE Marketing as brand consulting agency, and has also extended its scope in social media, starting in June.

Chan cited that Facebook has over 600 million users and is still growing, making it the world's "third largest country" after China and India. Sina Weibo has over 130 million subscribers.

She added that social media, community tracking and monitoring, brand relationships and consumer engagement were not just trends but imperative for every marketer these days.

The newly minted WE Digital is led by Hugo Chan, who will be based in the Beijing office, while overseeing its offices in Shanghai, Nanjing and Hong Kong. The team also includes two social media consultants and professional bloggers Jenifer Guo and Cai Ling Hong, who will act as community managers in WE Digital's Beijing and Shanghai offices, respectively. They all came on board at the start of June.

Chan has 20 years' experience in the publishing and media marketing industry in Greater China, and was an independent consultant last year, specialising in social media marketing in China.
