Schmeichel, who was voted 'World’s Best Goalkeeper' in 1992 and 1993, will fill the role from 1 April 2012 for 12 months for both Courts Singapore and Malaysia. Included in his duties are store appearances in both countries and a part in Courts’ marketing campaigns for traditional and online media.
He will also play an integral role in community engagement activities that include Courts Young Lions and local charity organisations.
Schmeichel will be present in Singapore and Malaysia from 7 to 10 April, including an appearance at Court’s 38th birthday celebrations in the Lion City. Fans have the chance to win meet-and-greet passes for the events in Singapore through Facebook as well as contest tie-ups with newspaper and radio stations.
Terry O’Connor, chief executive officer at Courts, said, “Having Peter on board as our brand ambassador is something that we are very excited about. He is a renowned football legend and he certainly lends the Courts brand added star power and the partnership is also in line with our commitment to promote football.”
Commenting on the appointment, Schmeichel said, “I am really delighted to be working with Courts in Singapore and Malaysia and I can’t wait to connect with my fans in this part of the world. It is truly a very rewarding experience to be collaborating with a company that is as passionate as I am about football as a sport.”
In Singapore, Schmeichel will be involved in football community engagement programmes hosted by Courts, while meeting up with players from the S-League team Courts Young Lions (CYL) for a motivational talk.
He will also take part in the 'Shoot for hope' charity event, together with the CYL players and football players from the Singapore Disability Sports Council.
