GfK Malaysia said Malaysia’s contact lens industry revenue expanded by 4 per cent between 2010 and 2011.

Jennifer Chan, general manager of GfK Malaysia, said as the country develops and rises in affluence, the contact lens market has also evolved with users looking beyond basic health care to ways of enhancing their appearance.

She said, “Nowadays, it is very common, even for people with perfect vision, to put on a pair of cosmetic contact lenses to follow fashion and style trends originating in Korea and spilling across the rest of Asia."

GfK Malaysia said revenue contribution from the beauty contact lens segment made up only 19 per cent in the first quarter of 2010 but leapt to 26 per cent in the final quarter of 2011.

Chan said, “We foresee that the market in Malaysia will turn in a report card of single digit growth by year end, with quarterly beauty lens figures gaining importance as one of the main contributors of growth.”
