In a statement, Weight Watchers’ Australasia’s public relations manager noted that the appointment coincided with a re-branding initiative that would see the company take a “new, contemporary and innovative direction”.

A spokesperson for Weber Shandwick added that the agency would aim to drive recruitment and retention of members by positioning Weight Watchers as the continent’s most effective weight management support system, and establishing it as a “visionary thought leader” by contributing to the ongoing debate on healthy living.

Weber Shandwick will reportedly work alongside digital agency Amnesia, media strategy consultancy Bellamy Hayden, and Australian advertising agency BMF to develop an integrated communications programme.

Obesity is a major problem in Australasia, particularly in Australia, with more than 7.5 million of its 21 million population classified as overweight or obese.
