FUJIAN - Chinese sportswear manufacturer Anta has signed the world number one female tennis star, Jelena Jankovic, as brand ambassador, marking a growing focus by the brand on international exposure.

Jankovic, whose contract with Reebok recently expired, will start wearing Anta sports apparel, shoes and accessories worldwide starting at the 2009 Australian Open, which begins today.

The 23-year-old tennis star has co-designed the sports range with Anta under the name JJ, in a deal that is said to be one of the biggest ever in women’s tennis.

The partnership is the first time a Chinese sports brand has aligned with a world number one female tennis player.

Xu Yang, marketing director of Anta said: “We are the first Chinese brand to sign a world number one sports player. Normally only big players like Nike and Adidas sign up world number one sports stars.”

He added: “Signing the international sports star as brand ambassador doesn’t mean we plan to expand globally, in fact we just want to focus on the China market, which still has lots of potential for growth.”

Chinese stars usually advertise foreign brands in the China market.
