McCann Erickson, ZenithOptimedia and Weber Shandwick scoop Shanghai Expo duties

SHANGHAI - McCann Erickson and ZenithOptimedia have been appointed by Shanghai General Motors (Shanghai GM) to handle a campaign promoting the 2010 Shanghai World Expo. Separately, Weber Shandwick has picked up a PR brief from General Motors (GM) to handle PR around the brand's Pavilion at the event.

GM is the official automotive sponsor of the event along with its joint venture partner Shanghai Automotive Industry Corporation (SAIC), which owns a 50 per cent stake in Shanghai GM. The SAIC-GM Pavilion is said to be one of the more prominent pavilions at the 2010 Expo, which has the tagline ‘Better city, better life’

McCann Erickson Shanghai won the Shanghai GM business, which includes all advertising, marketing, digital, TV and event management, without a pitch. The campaign will drive people to the Expo. A source close to the win said Shanghai GM’s creative plan for the campaign had not yet been approved. ZenithOptimedia Shanghai will handle media.

Weber Shandwick Shanghai, which is the global PR agency for GM, will be its official public relations counsel for the Expo, including its Pavilion.

The Shanghai 2010 World Expo marks GM’s first world exposition sponsorship outside the US.

“The World Expo 2010 Shanghai will provide an unparalleled platform for GM to showcase its future advanced technology solutions to its largest growing market - China,” said Weber Shandwick Shanghai MD Darren Burns. “The Expo will be a great opportunity for consumers to experience the new GM, whether through its online website or offline Expo activities.”
