Augmented reality (AR) is everwhere, invading magazines, newspapers and even the Ben & Jerry's ice cream carton in the fridge. Here are are some of the best AR apps around plus a few others guaranteed to make your life easier.

Wikitude was started by Austrian start-up company Mobilizy, and has since expanded to Wikitude World Browser and Wikitude Drive. This is one of the most comprehensive apps providing information for travellers. It's pretty much Wikipedia on the go.

 

Tokyo Underground by Presselite is said to be one of the first AR apps in Japan. Tokyo has one of the most complicated subway systems in the world. This app helps users find their way to train stations. Plus it includes nearby restaurants too.

Ever struggle to remember where you've parked you car? This Car Finder app developed by Intridea logs where the car is parked and redirects the user safely back to it.

If following people's tweets all day is not enough, there is always Tweet 360 by Presselite or Tweeps Around by Layars. Users can now locate nearby tweeting friends or strangers. Don't worry, there is an opt-in and out capability to choose whether you want to be spotted or not.

Furniture is a hassle to return after purchase. Ikea in Spain has takes the pain out of the process by helping customers get it right the first time around. Mobile Dreams Factory has partnered with Ikea to develop a 2010 Ikea catalog app.

A new take on an old marketing tool, iButterfly by Japanese company Mobile Art Lab brings together design and technology with this app. Users can collect beautifully designed virtual butterflies which in turn translates into coupons from partner outlets.

ZugSTAR is an app that streams live AR programs. Pay attention because this tool has the potential to redefine education, business and perhaps even relationships.

GoogleMobile is turning science fiction into reality with this new app. Voice activation on Android handsets is not just for finding names in the address book anymore. Voice Actions has 12 separate commands including text messaging, phone dialing and sending emails.
