McCann Worldgroup China MD exits

Shu Wu, managing director of McCann Worldgroup China, will leave her role. In a statement to Campaign Asia-Pacific, the agency network confirmed that Wu is returning to the client side. However, it’s unspecified which company she'll be joining.

Ghassan Harfouche, president of McCann Worldgroup APMENA, thanked Wu for her service: “I’d like to thank Shu for her strong leadership and dedication over the past three-and-a-half years. She’s made a very positive contribution to our business, and we wish her all the best as she returns to the client side.”

Wu joined McCann Worldgroup in 2020 as general manager to lead the teams in Shanghai and Guangzhou. Before joining McCann, she worked for Blue Focus Group and Starbucks China’s social media team. She was selected into Campaign's 40 Under 40 in 2023.

McCann Worldgroup China is currently without a leader. Last February, the agency’s China CEO, Emily Chang, stepped down after nearly three years at the helm. She later returned to the US to lead Wunderman Thompson’s (now VML) West region. Surprisingly, McCann Worldgroup has yet to announce a successor for the China CEO position. In the interim, Wu has been leading the team in China since Chang’s departure.

Notably, beyond Chang and Wu, other key members of the McCann Worldgroup leadership team in China also underwent significant changes in 2023. The agency’s China chief creative officer, Yinbo Ma, exited, and its China chief finance officer, Amon Jiang, departed to join Ogilvy.
